The designation will offer Cass graduates a significant headstart when progressing their financial services careers.

The Centre of Excellence designation means that Cass graduates who complete the following Cass Masters' programmes will also be eligible for the award of the SII Diploma (which will become formally known as the "SII Masters" programme) without having to take any of the SII exams:

• MSc Finance
• MSc Investment Management

In order to achieve the SII Masters, graduates of the above programmes will need to have become an SII student member by the first day of the second term of their Cass Masters programme. They will also take and pass the SII online Integrity & Ethics learning programme. Following these qualifying criteria, the graduates will then be eligible for full SII membership*. In addition Cass students will be eligible to compete for the SII's Stephen Cooke Award and other SII Awards.

SII and Cass will share good practice in assessment and quality assurance and will establish a joint Annual Lecture to encourage students to combine academic and professionally related learning.

For other degrees, Cass will also be accredited to directly prepare candidates wishing to take relevant SII examinations on other Cass programmes, including undergraduate programmes. SII will also proactively consider exemption on a module by module basis on undergraduate and postgraduate Cass programmes. The aim is to help as many Cass students as possible to achieve SII recognition in a cost-effective manner by combining academic studies with professional qualifications.

Ruth Martin, Managing Director of SII said, "We are delighted to appoint Cass Business School as our first Centre of Excellence. In order to receive this designation a given University must be outstanding in the investment related programmes it offers. This is all aimed at providing the best possible start to a career in financial services for participants. We hope this will also lead to cooperation internationally."

Steve Haberman, Deputy Dean of Cass Business School, said: "It is a great honour for Cass to become the first UK University to be accredited as a Centre of Excellence by the Securities & Investment Institute. We already have one of the strongest MSc portfolios in Europe and this designation will further enhance the employment prospects of those studying their MSc at Cass."

As part of a deepening engagement with the University sector SII intends to appoint a few other leading Universities in the UK and overseas as Centres of Excellence. Cass will be the only London based Centre of Excellence.
