Up to 30% of the UAE population is at risk of heart attack due to undiagnosed hypertension. It is estimated that almost 1 billion people worldwide have high blood pressure and over half a billion more will have developed it by 2025. It is one of the strongest risk factors for heart attacks, heart failures and strokes, which are among the most common causes of death in modern society.

The recently formed Regional Alliance for Hypertension Awareness (RAHA) announced that World Hypertension Day has been marked in the UAE in an effort to promote hypertension prevention and control. According to Dr VJ Sebastian, Specialist Cardiologist, Welcare Hospital, "Blood pressure should be checked at least twice a year, if not more often, but people are simply not doing this. Patients seldom notice symptoms until the damage is already done. We all know sedentary lifestyles, obesity, high cholesterol and diabetes are among the factors that lead to high blood pressure, but I don't believe people are aware of how serious it can actually be and the need to keep their blood pressure under control. I hope that this awareness initiative will encourage the public to take a more active role in their fight against this chronic, and often fatal, disease."

New initiatives are being developed across the UAE to raise awareness on hypertension. RAHA and Welcare World Health Systems hope that World Hypertension Day is just the first step in their campaign to inform the public on the importance of maintaining and monitoring blood pressure levels.
