The CELTA is open to candidates of all nationalities with an IELTS score of Band 7 or above. Previously, the course only attracted native speakers. However, due to the demand for teachers in the region to have an internationally recognised qualification, 80% of our candidates are now non-native speakers.
International House is known as a world leader in teacher training, especially for the CELTA. This certificate is internationally accepted and is widely regarded as one of the most important forms of training in the field of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).
The CELTA course is suitable for candidates who have little or no previous English language teaching experience, or for candidates with some experience but little previous training. The course enables candidates to develop familiarity with the principles of effective teaching and acquire a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners. Input sessions cover a variety of relevant topics, including classroom management, language awareness and analysis, lesson planning, and developing the four skills (Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing). A significant part of the course is spent in the classroom and candidates are given the opportunity to take part in teaching practice and observe experienced teachers. Candidates also complete a range of practically focused written assignments to consolidate new techniques and theories.
Raising language teaching standards
As a result of the government's new initiative to improve the standards of language teaching in UAE schools, the CELTA (The Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is becoming a prerequisite for all major educational establishments throughout the UAE and surrounding Gulf region.
