Etisalat was the first utility company to implement GIS in the region in 1989 in building its Outside Plant (OSP) network, and in 2000, Etisalat was once again the first in the region to adopt the Telcordia Network Engineer, a geospatial network planning and engineering solution.
Etisalat constantly works to identify the most advanced and relevant solutions, and its adoption of GIS has ensured that it is able to integrate a wide range of services and operations.
Choosing to go beyond the traditional uses of GIS, Etisalat has incorporated the system into its network development, project cost management, materials request, and execution control cycles. Etisalat has also developed a number of applications and system enhancements to cater to business requirements. GIS in Etisalat is used not only by Etisalat's Engineering department, but also by the Marketing & Sales departments. The GIS system in Etisalat has grown to be a vital management decision-making tool.

Etisalat has been awarded for its usage by M/s GISTEC, the UAE distributors of ESRI GIS solutions, at a gala ceremony held in Dubai on 21st May 2006.
