In association with the Blood Bank Department, Al Wasl Hospital, the Health Center at the American University in Dubai organized The Blood Drive Campaign on May 22, 2007. Blood collected during the drive will be donated to the Thalassaemia Center at Al Wasl Hospital in Dubai.

AUD's Health Center, which organizes the Blood Drive Campaign every six months on campus, is glad to be part of this humanitarian cause. Nelly Halabi, Health Center at AUD, commented:" Donating blood is one of the best ways of helping others. It is also good for the body since it decreases blood pressure and minimizes the risk of a heart attack."

Seven Medical staff from Al Wasl Hospital assisted AUD Health Center staff during the event which also included Hemoglobin Blood Tests and Medical check ups for each donor.

The Thalassaemia Center, which launched its operations in early 1989, is considered to be a leader in the treatment of Thalassaemia in the UAE and the Gulf. Over twenty five cases of Thalassaemia can be accepted daily in the center's fully equipped facility.

The Blood Donation Center at Al Wasl Hospital conducts outreach programs across Dubai in hotels, schools, universities, and companies on a daily basis. It also has regular donors from all across the UAE. Siji George Joseph, Staff Nurse at the center, commented: "Thalassaemia patients need continuous blood donations for their treatment. It is commendable that the students of The American University in Dubai are voluntarily donating blood for a good cause. This is a very generous act and is highly appreciated."

It is important to mention that The American University in Dubai will be hosting another Blood Drive in Fall 2007.
