JXB's first runway to be completed in October 2007
- United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, May 29 - 2007 at 12:02
- PRESS RELEASE
Construction of the first runway of Dubai World Central International Airport (JXB) - scheduled to be the world's largest airport - is on target for completion in October 2007.
"This first runway - of a final six - will enable JXB to commence operations in mid-2008 as the world's largest passenger and freighter airport and cargo hub."
"The progress, achieved in just over a year, is a reflection of Dubai government's commitment to the region's burgeoning aviation infrastructure development. With US$ 82 billion earmarked for this growth in Dubai, the emirate is leading the way across the Middle East, African and South Asian markets, part of a global aviation market which will be worth US$ 2.6 trillion by 2025," continued Sheikh Ahmed.
With the gathering of many airport suppliers from these markets at the Airport Show currently underway at the Airport Expo Dubai, JXB, which is a Greenfield development, has grabbed the spotlight as trade visitors and exhibitors alike are updated about the project's progress.
JXB is at the core of the massive 140 square kilometre Dubai World Central (DWC) urban aviation community being built in Jebel Ali just 40 kilometres from Dubai city centre. Al Nabooda Contracting Company, which is building the runway - labelled Runway 12/30 - is also working on three parallel taxiways and associated rapid exits - 40% complete so far, the airside road network and infrastructure services such as airfield lighting, power, water, fire fighting and drainage network.
In conjunction with the adjacent Dubai Logistics City and Jebel Ali port and free zone, JXB forms the world's first truly integrated multi-modal logistics platform with all transportation modes, logistics and value-added services, such as product manufacturing and assembly, coming together in a single-bonded free zone environment.
The US$8.1 billion JXB airport will have a capacity to handle between 120-150 million passengers and 12 million tons of cargo annually upon completion.

About Dubai World Central:Dubai World Central (DWC) is a 140 square kilometre urban aviation community centred around the world's largest international airport. Currently being built 40 kilometres from the existing Dubai International Airport the project is almost twice the size of Hong Kong Island.
DWC creates a new benchmark in urban planning and destination living designed to support Dubai's aviation, tourism, commercial and logistics requirements until 2050 and represents one of the most important developments in the history of the United Arab Emirates.
Eventually home to 750,000 people, DWC will be true 'city-within-a-city' with all the amenities that make up a world-class residential destination.
DWC, with infrastructure costs estimated at US $33 billion, comprises six specialized clustered zones: Dubai World Central International Airport (JXB), Dubai Logistics City (DLC), which also includes a dedicated aviation area, Commercial City, Residential City, Enterprise Park and a 36-hole golf resort.
DWC is backed by the Government of Dubai and is chaired by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation, Government of Dubai and Chairman of the Emirates Group.
About Dubai World Central International Airport:
This new facility will be 10 times the size of the current Dubai International Airport and Dubai Cargo Village combined. Its passenger capacity of over 120 million passengers a year can be judged in context alongside the world's busiest airport Atlanta which in 2004, for which the latest figures are available, handled 83.5 million passengers.
The airport will have six parallel runways all of 4.5 kilometres in length and separated by a minimum of 800 metres and a 92 metre high control tower - the highest in the Middle East - the 'flower concept' icon design of which will create an aviation landmark for the region. The control tower will be fully equipped with the latest in avionics and navigational aids. Control tower construction will begin in October this year.
The airport will also boast hotels and shopping malls, support facilities and state-of-the-art maintenance facilities which will create a regional maintenance hub capable of A, B and C checks on all aircraft, including the A380.
JXB will be linked to the existing, award-winning Dubai International Airport (DXB) via an express rail system and ultimately will be serviced by the Dubai Light Railway Network (Dubai Metro). Some 100,000 car parking spaces will be available for airport parking and car rental services.
