Etisalat Misr relies on Sun for business and operational support

In a bid to consolidate its market position as the third and latest entrant in Egypt telecoms sector, Etisalat Misr has selected solutions from Sun Microsystems as the core for its Business Support System (BSS) and Operating Support System (OSS) layer.

This move will offer superior business agility and allow Etisalat Misr to expand and reinforce its presence in the new market.

BSS and OSS platforms are components used by telecom operators to run their business operations, and are linked to support various end-to-end services. While BSS covers the role of product and customer management, and revenue and fulfillment management, OSS revolves around processes, data, applications and technology.

"This is a significant deployment for Sun not only in the region but also in the telecom sector and clearly reflects our growing success in Egypt. We remain committed to support Etisalat Misr in its drive to expand its presence, increase subscriber base and become a leading service provider in Egypt," said Chris Cornelius, Managing Director, Sun Microsystems, MENA

Chris also added: "With its demonstrated expertise across a wide scope of industry verticals in the MENA region, Sun Microsystems was the choice to support the expansion in the Egypt telecoms sector. The new infrastructure will enable Etisalat Misr to increase productivity and utilize our resources effectively, making it possible for us to offer better, competitive services to its customers."


"The Telecommunications market in the region is rapidly growing, expected to reach 35% of MENA region within the upcoming two years, which will increase the demand on the solutions in regards to this sector as a result of the noticeable increase in mobile phone and internet users. Yet, the opportunities are still numerous as the market has not reached the saturation phase still, in addition to the entrance of new operators lately," added Chris.

"Sun will provide Etisalat Misr with its Solaris Operating system to boost performance and stability, and the Java system directory server- enterprise edition for security and identity management. Sun is also Etisalat Misr's preferred system for the telco's SMS platform, which will run on a system provided and installed by Atos Origin." said Ossama Mahmoud, Sun Microsystems Account Manager in charge of Etisalat account.

"The newly-deployed infrastructure will help Etisalat Misr accelerate the rollout of its new telecoms services in the market, significantly reducing overall operational costs. The Sun infrastructure and software will also provide Etisalat Misr with easy access to critical information on a real-time basis, reduce system unavailability, and improve the overall management of new services" added Mahmoud.

Etisalat Misr's deployment includes Sun Fire servers, including 64-bit processors with Chip Multi threading technology and the Solaris Operating System. Offering the industry's most robust, secure, and popular UNIX operating system, the Sun Fire family of servers is designed to meet Etisalat Misr's most challenging network computing requirements. Sun will also provide Etisalat Misr with its Java availability suite; the world's only integrated cluster solution for data protection, recovery and application availability in the event of disasters.

Delivering up to twice the throughput of previous generation servers, the Sun Fire family server enables Etisalat Misr to deliver more applications and services to a greater number of users, with less data center space, while providing protection for existing applications and skill investments. Etisalat Misr have also opted for storage and back up solutions to effectively meet tiered storage needs and growing backup and archiving requirements. The solutions will help Etisalat Misr stream data-intense applications continuously at top speed, including email and databases. It will also provide modular flexibility to adapt to dynamic business requirements.
