Dubai School of Government course on 'Growth, Globalisation, and Gulf'
- United Arab Emirates: Saturday, June 09 - 2007 at 10:20
- PRESS RELEASE
Dubai School of Government (DSG) will organise a course on 'Growth, Globalisation and the Gulf' as part of its second Executive Education Programme offered in partnership with Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.
The course is designed to examine the modern socio-economic context characterised by rapid globalisation and growth. It will cater to decision-makers in the government, private sector and non-profit organisations in the Gulf, who seek to understand the challenges and opportunities.
Dr. Tarik Yousef, Dean of DSG, said: "An understanding of the dynamics and factors that constitute the current global context is imperative for decision-makers of major institutions. This will help them to capitalise on the opportunities presented by globalisation and rapid growth.
"Given that the Gulf region and more specifically Dubai, is witnessing rapid development, Dubai School of Government seeks to address an immediate issue through the course. It will offer relevant insight into these issues and will help guide the region's drive towards higher growth."
'Growth, Globalisation and the Gulf' will be presented in a sequence of important topics within an economics framework, rather than an emphasis on mathematical models or tools.
Asim Khwaja, Associate Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, said: "When one thinks of globalisation, the first thing that comes to mind is international exchange of goods and services. However, many fail to realise that international exchange of ideas is just as important.
"Dubai is rapidly becoming a leading hub for both. In this programme, we hope to exchange ideas with a select group of participants from the region. This will include perspectives on the role globalisation can play, not only in fostering economic growth, but in promoting other important goals as well."
Some of the issues to be tackled during the three-day course will include, why some countries perform better economically than others, whether globalisation is good or bad, whether natural resources are a boon or a curse, and what kind of institutions and governance can help a country make the most.
Commenting on the course, Jeffrey Frankel, Harpel Chair at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, said: "It will be challenging to examine such important questions in a place like Dubai, the hub of one of the most dynamic regions in the world today. We are excited to be inaugurating, 'Growth, Globalisation and the Gulf,' another step in the rewarding collaboration between Harvard and the Dubai School of Government."
The Executive Education Programme provides concise, focused courses that target government and non-government leaders who seek to update themselves on the latest developments in public policy, leadership and management.
Dubai School of Government offers a range of customised and open enrolment programmes through its faculty and in cooperation with international partners. The partners include Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, Singapore, and a network of renowned experts.
