Saks Fifth Avenue was the brainchild of Horace Saks and Bernard Gimbel, both of whom operated independent retail stores on New York's 34th Street at Herald Square in the early 1900s. Their dream was to construct a unique specialty store that would become synonymous with fashionable, gracious living. Combining the assets of their great merchant families, they purchased a site between 49th and 50th Streets on upper Fifth Avenue and became the first large retail operation in what was then primarily a residential district. Unlike many businesses, whose vision and even product can radically change over the decades, Saks Fifth Avenue's founding reason for existing is still intact today. It started as - and still remains- the ultimate fashion store. This goes well beyond the brands they carry. It is the level of service, the innovations in retailing, and the kind of relationships they develop with their customers that make Saks the ultimate high-performance experience.

Saks Fifth Avenue, one of the world's preeminent specialty retailer , is renowned for its superlative American and international designer collections, its expertly edited assortment of handbags, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics and home furnishings and the first-rate fashion expertise and the exemplary client service of its associates. Today, Saks operates 54 full - line stores in 25 states, 2 stores in the Middle East in Dubai & Riyadh, 50 OFF 5th outlet stores and the company's online store saks.com.
