The much-anticipated tenth edition of the leading regional summer fun fiesta which is expected to draw in a larger number of visitors to the tourist hub of the Middle East.

Upon arrival at the airport, DSS tourists will be pleasantly surprised to see the DSS logo and the ever-smiling mascot, Modhesh, adorn the airport premises. The smiling mascot is the DSS way of welcoming all visitors to explore the charms of the UAE, characterized by its white sandy beaches and fascinating palm tress.

"Since the launch of the DSS 10 years ago, we have always been keen to cooperate with the DSS Office in order to promote this leading regional event in a way that fits its distinguished standing. DSS reflects the deep-rooted traditions of UAE's citizens and the country's tourist potential," said Sultan Bin Toaq, Manager Airport Security Pass Directorate of Protocol & Public Relations, Department of Civil Aviation.

"We have introduced new, innovative procedures for this year's edition tailored to portray the good image of UAE in tourist, cultural and social spheres," he added.

He noted that air traffic at the Dubai International Airport was increasing, with around 17 million travellers having used the facility since early this year till date.

"We expect a further increase in the number of travellers over the coming period due to the far-reaching fame now enjoyed by the DSS all over the world."

He added that during this year's edition of the DSS, free gifts, including the DSS logo and Modhesh merchandise would be given to all travellers, especially children, arriving to the airport during the two-and-a-half-month long mega event.

"Children will be a lucky lot this year as we will provide them with a special lounge space where they would be able to get refreshments while their parents go to collect their bags. Outbound passengers will also be provided special attention on our part in order to help them reflect the good image of Dubai overseas. Modhesh will, for the first time, be around at the departure terminals to bid farewell to our visitors."

He also mentioned that transit passengers would enjoy special treatment and get a clear idea of the event. "They will be updated on the event's activities through promotion booklets and brochures available everywhere at the airport. Such information is likely to motivate them to visit Dubai in order to enjoy our tempting shopping offers and discounts as well as spectacular family entertainment vistas provided by Dubai."

"Transit passengers will have a preview of the UAE heritage through the Heritage Photography Studio held at the Transit Hall for the first time this year. Persons dressed in the Emarati traditional uniform will distribute desserts among the travellers."

Wide, high-resolution screens inside the airport will present DSS promotions as part of the continued advertising campaigns tailored to best publicise the event among the largest possible number of tourists.

Sultan Bin Toaq concluded by mentioning the presence of special teams to monitor DSS activities at the airport. "A team of young Emarati men will be in charge of executing and supervising all DSS-related activities at the airport as part of the coordination taking place with the DSS Office in order to provide our local cadres an opportunity to develop their skills and directly get involved in interesting yet challenging work schedules."

Launched in 1998, Dubai Summer Surprises was conceived as the foremost family entertainment event during the summer season for the whole of GCC. Targeted at visitors from outside the UAE and within the country, DSS has been a major entertainment and shopping attraction since its inception and witnessed 1,875,000 visitors in the year 2006 compared to 600,000 in 1998. The event has succeeded in positioning Dubai as the leading summer destination in the region.

Organised by government departments with the cooperation of the public sector, the ten-week event is a celebration of different surprises that offer visitors and shoppers the perfect family entertainment opportunity and the ideal combination of shopping and adventure. Over the years DSS has hosted numerous surprises such as Food, Water, Global, Ice, Flower, Sports, Heritage, Arts, Techno, Cartoons, Colour, Sweets, Knowledge, and Back-2-School. The summer event lays special emphasis on children, who are provided all the opportunities to hone their skills while enjoying a fun-packed ten weeks of activities. DSS also has its own mascot, Modhesh, the ever smiling brand ambassador who embodies everything that the event stands for - fun, excitement, brightness and unlimited joy for children.

Dubai Summer Surprises as a venture has contributed significantly to the economy of Dubai and continues to do so by enhancing different economic sectors during a lean period of economic activity in summer. An increase in visitor expenditure from AED 850 million in 1998 to AED 2.57 billion in 2006 is a clear indication of the event's ability to drive economic growth during summer. Into its tenth year, Dubai Summer Surprises has come a long way by building on the successes of the previous editions and aims to create a benchmark for future years to provide the three most important characteristics of the event - shopping, winning, and entertainment.
