FAJ slams region

A report by the Federation of Arab Journalists has described 2006 as the worst year yet for freedom of the press in the Arab world, according to the Gulf News. There were instances of journalists being summarily dismissed in eight Arab nations and of them having to pay fines in 11 countries. The study covered 19 Arab countries and foreign ownership of publications is only permitted in the UAE, Iraq and Tunisia.
