Dubai Women's College teacher receives Wal-Mart Teaching Excellence Award

Syed Bashir, Business faculty member at Dubai Women's College (DWC) has been named a recipient of the prestigious Wal-Mart Teaching Excellence Award presented by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).
"DWC hires highly qualified teachers and we make sure they all maintain excellent professional and teaching records. Syed's award today is another accomplishment not only for him as a professional, but also for the entire community of DWC," noted Dr. Howard Reed, Higher Colleges of Technology Senior Director and DWC Director.
Syed will be honored at the 2007 ACBSP annual conference in Orlando this summer. ACBSP is responsible for accrediting business programs at associate degree and baccalaureate/graduate degree colleges and universities with a focus on teaching and learning in the classroom.
DWC is accredited by ACBSP. "The regional recipient is selected for outstanding leadership and service in business education," explains Mr. Douglas Viehland, Executive Director of ACBSP. "We are proud to honor Mr. Bashir for the commitment to teaching excellence".
The Wal-Mart Teaching Excellence Award Committee looked at five criteria in evaluating professors for the award, including quality of classroom teaching and learning; institutional versatility; curriculum development; professional development and community commitment. Bashir as the regional award winner also competed with winners from other regions for receipt of the international award. "As a corporation, we are proud to recognize teachers who encourage students to excel in business education," said Steve Hunter, Vice President Retirement & Savings for Wal-Mart.
The award, which is funded through the Wal-Mart and Sam's Club Foundation, supports teaching excellence. Wal-Mart and Sam's Club have an ongoing commitment to education.
Last year, Wal-Mart donated more than $57 million to support educational initiatives, including local schools and universities, student scholarships, educational organizations and the company's annual Teacher of the Year program.
