- United Arab Emirates: Thursday, July 05 - 2007 at 08:19
- PRESS RELEASE
Saeed Al Nabouda, CEO of DSS, revealed that the first two weeks of Dubai Summer Surprises 2007 were a huge success while comparing data available for the same period in DSS 2006.
He added that Modhesh Fun City, a popular venue with all during every DSS edition, welcomed 73,028 visitors of various age groups and nationalities between June 21 and July 3, registering an increase of 12 per cent compared to the same period of DSS 2006.
The figures revealed also show that sales revenues in shopping malls rose by a substantial 65 per cent in the first week only, touching AED 48.8 million which is a clear indication of the success of DSS that is today the leading regional summer shopping and entertainment event.
Al Nabouda said, "The initial figures that we have gathered from various locations of the event indicate an unprecedented rise in several aspects. This in turn, denotes the success of the new strategy in attracting larger audience."
"We view this success as a direct result of the diversification of events in the tenth edition of DSS as we have noticed that visitors attending our events constitute various age groups. Everyone noticed that the first two weeks of DSS 2007 offered events that catered to different age groups in comparison with pervious editions where a majority of our activities were focused on children only. This success can also be contributed to the 'Shop and Win Millions' promotion campaign that is organized by Dubai Shopping Malls Group in collaboration with the DSS Office."
Visitor numbers for DSS 2007 are slated to reach 2.16 million with a 15 per cent increase over DSS 2006 and the corresponding expenditure is expected to touch AED 3.08 billion, registering a 20 per cent increase over the last edition.

Note to editors:
Launched in 1998, Dubai Summer Surprises was conceived as the foremost family entertainment event during the summer season for the whole of GCC. Targeted at visitors from outside the UAE and within the country, DSS has been a major entertainment and shopping attraction since its inception and witnessed 1,875,000 visitors in the year 2006 compared to 600,000 in 1998. The event has succeeded in positioning Dubai as the leading summer destination in the region.
The ten-week event is a celebration of different surprises that offer visitors and shoppers the perfect family entertainment opportunity and the ideal combination of shopping and adventure. Over the years DSS has hosted numerous surprises such as Food, Water, Global, Ice, Flower, Sports, Heritage, Arts, Techno, Cartoons, Colour, Sweets, Knowledge, and Back-2-School. The summer event lays special emphasis on children, who are provided all the opportunities to hone their skills while enjoying a fun-packed ten weeks of activities. DSS also has its own mascot, Modhesh, the ever smiling brand ambassador who embodies everything that the event stands for - fun, excitement, brightness and unlimited joy for children.
Dubai Summer Surprises as a venture has contributed significantly to the economy of Dubai and continues to do so by enhancing different economic sectors during a lean period of economic activity in summer. An increase in visitor expenditure from AED 850 million in 1998 to AED 2.57 billion in 2006 is a clear indication of the event's ability to drive economic growth during summer. Into its tenth year, Dubai Summer Surprises has come a long way by building on the successes of the previous editions and aims to create a benchmark for future years to provide the three most important characteristics of the event - shopping, winning, and entertainment.
