Dubai Festival City was transformed into a huge kitchen of sorts as chefs from UAE and all over the GCC gathered to mark the opening of the Middle East Junior Chef Awards and the start of the third week of Food Surprises.

The event was officially inaugurated by Saeed Al Nabouda, CEO of DSS, who was shown around through the many culinary displays, accompanied by Chef Uwe Micheel, Director of Kitchens at Radisson SAS, Dubai Deira Creek and the President of the Emirates Culinary Guild. The Junior Chef Awards are sponsored by French Dairy, Nestle, Al Otaiba, and Kenwood.

Dressed in white coats and tall open hats, chefs from various renowned hotels in the GCC battled it out in temporary kitchens on the first day of the Junior Chef Awards. The Awards are the only competition in the Middle East that honour junior chefs who are of the rank chef de partie or below.

"The Junior Chef Awards is one of the highest recognitions accorded to chefs and there was no better occasion to hold it than the Food Surprises. The awards are not only a display of culinary ability but an avenue for chefs to aid innovation in the food service industry," said Chef Uwe Micheel.

Chef Ulrich Jablonka, the 2006 Middle East Junior Chef of the year, is also present in this year's contest, looking to keep his title. "Winning the Junior Chef Award of the Year consecutively is a difficult thing but I don't think about it while I cook. For me, this is not a contest but a demonstration of what I can come up with in the kitchen so it's always about innovation and not winning."

As the kitchen got busy, the tables overflowed with food. By evening, it was literally a feast for the eyes as colourful cakes in various designs, pastries in the shapes of fish and dragon, and bread baked in different sizes awaited visitors and shoppers. The exhibits on the first day were adjudged by a panel of internationally renowned chefs.

The third week of Food Surprises features contests in 23 different categories so visitors can have a different culinary experience everyday till July 11. Apart from the contest itself, cooking demonstrations and a live ice carving provide plenty of entertainment for food enthusiasts. Food Surprises runs till August 31st, exploring cuisines from around the world through live cooking demonstrations and exciting workshops.

Launched in 1998, Dubai Summer Surprises was conceived as the foremost family entertainment event during the summer season for the whole of GCC. Targeted at visitors from outside the UAE and within the country, DSS has been a major entertainment and shopping attraction since its inception and witnessed 1,875,000 visitors in the year 2006 compared to 600,000 in 1998. The event has succeeded in positioning Dubai as the leading summer destination in the region.

The ten-week event is a celebration of different surprises that offer visitors and shoppers the perfect family entertainment opportunity and the ideal combination of shopping and adventure. Over the years DSS has hosted numerous surprises such as Food, Water, Global, Ice, Flower, Sports, Heritage, Arts, Techno, Cartoons, Colour, Sweets, Knowledge, and Back-2-School. The summer event lays special emphasis on children, who are provided all the opportunities to hone their skills while enjoying a fun-packed ten weeks of activities. DSS also has its own mascot, Modhesh, the ever smiling brand ambassador who embodies everything that the event stands for - fun, excitement, brightness and unlimited joy for children.

Dubai Summer Surprises as a venture has contributed significantly to the economy of Dubai and continues to do so by enhancing different economic sectors during a lean period of economic activity in summer. An increase in visitor expenditure from AED 850 million in 1998 to AED 2.57 billion in 2006 is a clear indication of the event's ability to drive economic growth during summer. Into its tenth year, Dubai Summer Surprises has come a long way by building on the successes of the previous editions and aims to create a benchmark for future years to provide the three most important characteristics of the event - shopping, winning, and entertainment.
