The achievements helped the company scoop two gold awards from the US-based International District Energy Association (IDEA) - which works to advance global environmental quality through efficient district energy systems.

Rob Thornton, President of IDEA, said: "Tabreed's achievements are phenomenal given the fact that the industry in the Middle East is less than a decade old. We look forward to many years of sustained growth from the region."

Tabreed took both the top honours for 2006 up for grabs in the 'Beyond North America' region for Total Buildings Committed or Connected to Service, and Total Square Footage, a feat which it first achieved in 2004.

"Tabreed is the now the world's largest district cooling company and receiving this prestigious honour from the leading sector body is validation of our success," said Dany Safi, CEO of the company also known as National Central Cooling Company (PJSC).

"Tabreed has won many major contracts recently including a major agreement with Abu Dhabi's leading developer - ALDAR Properties - which will significantly increase its capacity to provide cooling services in the near and medium term. Additionally, our partnerships and group companies in other regional markets such as the GCC and Levant ensure that we will maintain our market-leading position for the foreseeable future."

Earlier this year, Tabreed was honoured with the Global Partner award and its Chief Executive Officer, Dany Safi, scooped the Global Pioneer accolade from IDEA at its first gathering of its Middle East chapter at Abu Dhabi.
