Making the announcement at a Dubai Summer Surprises press conference to launch the first live pro gaming action in Dubai this week, Scott Valencia, Senior Vice President for CGS Global Operations, said, 'CGS is the first worldwide professional video gaming league, televised to more than 100,000,000 households on five continents. It is the only pro gaming organization where gamers are paid professional athletes. Gamers compete on teams and the teams compete as part of an organized professional league.'
Valencia continued, 'While CGS already has established six Region 1 franchise locations in the U.S., the Dubai franchise will be one of ten additional global franchise locations to be announced this year. The Dubai team will provide a Middle Eastern hub at the centre of Region 4. We are fully committed to establishing a permanent organisational team in the United Arab Emirates.'
Tshering Idnani, Senior Events Coordinator, DSS said, 'DSS is very happy to be associated with Championship Gaming Series and Game Frontier on this joint venture, as we are sure that it will add value to our stream of events during this 10th edition of the leading summer fiesta. DSS involvement in this attention-grabbing competition comes in line with the DSS new strategy that was announced earlier this year, which, in one of its new directions aims at expanding the events to attract various age groups and cater to a wider audience.'
'It is no secret that the Gaming Industry has become one of the most effective economy engines in several countries in the world. Its lucrative revenues and overwhelming popularity has made it impossible for any one to ignore its impact. However, we at DSS simply view video games as a fun filled activity that brings together friends and families to share quality time together, and we would like to thank our sponsors Dubai Festival City for their generous hospitality of the event' she added.
The CGS Commissioner, Andy Reif said, 'We're excited to announce our Dubai franchise and look forward to revealing the team name and drafting the Dubai team members later this year at a Regional Championship event to be announced soon.' Reif continued, 'We're also looking forward to announcing soon our Dubai General Manager, who will recruit, draft, and manage the Dubai team and be responsible for day-to-day management of the franchise.'
The CGS is the first worldwide professional video gaming league. Launched earlier this year, CGS features teams of the world's best gamers from Asia, the Middle East, North America, Latin America, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia. The league will distribute entertainment content to households worldwide via STAR in Asia, the Middle East, and Australia, DIRECTV in North America and Latin America, and BSkyB in the UK and Europe. For the first time, television viewers will be able to watch the competition from inside the game.
Since its inception, CGS has captured the excitement of the video gaming industry, attracting the world's top gamers and generating incredible enthusiasm from the gaming community. Statistics show that video games generate US$13 billion annually - exceeding Hollywood box office takings by US$3.5 billion.

About Dubai Summer Surprises
Launched in 1998, Dubai Summer Surprises was conceived as the foremost family entertainment event during the summer season for the whole of GCC. Targeted at visitors from outside the UAE and within the country, DSS has been a major entertainment and shopping attraction since its inception and witnessed 1,875,000 visitors in the year 2006 compared to 600,000 in 1998. The event has succeeded in positioning Dubai as the leading summer destination in the region.
The ten-week event is a celebration of different surprises that offer visitors and shoppers the perfect family entertainment opportunity and the ideal combination of shopping and adventure. Over the years DSS has hosted numerous surprises such as Food, Water, Global, Ice, Flower, Sports, Heritage, Arts, Techno, Cartoons, Colour, Sweets, Knowledge, and Back-2-School. The summer event lays special emphasis on children, who are provided all the opportunities to hone their skills while enjoying a fun-packed ten weeks of activities. DSS also has its own mascot, Modhesh, the ever smiling brand ambassador who embodies everything that the event stands for - fun, excitement, brightness and unlimited joy for children.
Dubai Summer Surprises as a venture has contributed significantly to the economy of Dubai and continues to do so by enhancing different economic sectors during a lean period of economic activity in summer. An increase in visitor expenditure from AED 850 million in 1998 to AED 2.57 billion in 2006 is a clear indication of the event's ability to drive economic growth during summer. Into its tenth year, Dubai Summer Surprises has come a long way by building on the successes of the previous editions and aims to create a benchmark for future years to provide the three most important characteristics of the event - shopping, winning, and entertainment.
