  • United Arab Emirates: Wednesday, July 18 - 2007 at 09:55
  • PRESS RELEASE

Australian exporters have set a new record for sheep meat exports to the Middle East, as mutton exports reached 52,175 tonnes swt for the 2006/2007 fiscal year, a 42 per cent increase on the previous year, and the largest fiscal year figure since 1993/1994, after the wool price scheme was abolished.

UAE (+95%) and the key destination of Saudi Arabia (26%) were the destinations behind the increases in mutton exports, and volumes to Qatar and Abu Dhabi were also strong.

In other global markets, falls in CIS were offset by gains in South Africa, whilst Asia, Europe and North America remained steady. Total Australian mutton exports for the fiscal year totalled 162,217 tonnes, a 12% increase on the previous year.

Lamb volumes to the Middle East topped 20,000 tonnes for the first time, a 24% increase on the previous year. UAE (+81%) is also behind the surge in lamb exports, with most other Middle Eastern markets steady or slightly slower.

This increase, combined with those in USA, UK and South Africa saw Australian lamb exports for the 2006/2007 fiscal year reach a record 150,243 tonnes.

The increases in sheep meat exports to the Middle East are largely because of the drought causing increases in supply. Despite an appreciating Australian dollar, Middle east demand remains strong, driven by Australia's solid reputation for safe food productions systems, highly credible Halal procedures and reliable eating quality.

Additionally, Australian exporters have been helped by a reduction of New Zealand competition in the region, lingering avian flu concerns and an increase in the price of Brazilian beef.

About MLA and Australian meat

Employing the most advanced international technologies and stringent hygiene standards, Australia is a leading producer and exporter of red meat products with annual exports of 2,500,000 tonnes of meat products, including 910,000 tonnes of beef and veal, 141,000 tonnes of lamb and 141,000 tonnes of mutton. In 2004 - 2005, Australia exported more than 3 million sheep and 81 thousand cattle to the Middle East.

Moreover, Australian processors who export to the Middle East also meet strict regulations on Sharia-compliant slaughter procedures set by GCC countries- these systems are audited by representatives from the GCC to ensure that Halal products exported to the region meet religious requirements. These regulations are rigorously supported by Australian government legislation.
