Seatrade seeks industry's best

Nominations have opened for the prestigious annual regional awards recognising maritime safety and environment, ship and port operations and security, and port and shipping business efficiency.

There are 25 categories for this year's 4th Seatrade Middle East and Indian Subcontinent Awards to be staged at Al Johara Ballroom, Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai, on 5 November 2007. The high level event is expected to be attended by around 800 senior executives of the region's maritime industry.

For 20 years Seatrade has presented awards championing high standards and quality in shipping issues. The scheme is designed to celebrate and reward excellence and innovation across the region over the previous 12 months.

A distinguished panel of independent judges will be assessing entries according to:

• Contribution to the development of the maritime sector

• Innovation - technical, operational or commercial

• Commitment to safety and quality

• Social and environmental responsibility

• Business enterprise and achievement

• Engagement with training and development of personnel

The 25 awards include a Lifetime Achievement Award to honour an individual who has made a significant and lasting contribution to the shipping and maritime industry in the region.

Several Seatrade awards are close to the heart of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). These include four categories which will be judged by a panel chaired by IMO Secretary General Rear Admiral Efthimios Mitropoulos. The categories are: safety and quality; environment protection; and education and training.

Other awards will be for: ship repair/shipyard; port authority; marine insurance; ship manager; ship owner/operator; container terminal operator; bulk operator; marine and offshore services; ship finance; classification society; ship agent; workboats; ship broker; maritime law; free zone authority; transport/logistics/freight; deal of the year; and personality of the year.

A select panel of independent judges will judge the maritime business related categories based on outstanding success and achievement. The panel is made up of: Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah, Executive Vice Chairman, DP World and Group Chief Executive Officer, Ports and Free Zone World; Capt J. C. Anand, Chairman, Indian Register of Shipping; Eivind Grostad, Senior Vice president and Regional manager Middle East and India, Det Norske Veritas; Sabyasachi Hajara, Chairman and Managing Director, The Shipping Corporation of India; Yudhishthir Khatau, Managing Director, Varun Shipping Company Limited and President of The Indian National Ship Owners' Association (INSA); Capt. Jitendra Misra, Managing Director, Emarat Maritime, Chairman of Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and Secretary General of UAE Ship Owners Association; Sanjay Mehta, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Essar Shipping Ltd; Mukesh Oza, President- Samsara Group; Fetooh Al Zayani, Qatar Financial Centre, MD, Business Development (Insurance & Reinsurance). The Chairman is Chris Hayman, Chairman and Managing Director, Seatrade.

A separate judging panel will decide the winners in the IMO related categories based on technical merit. The members are: Chairman, Rear Admiral Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary General, International Maritime Organization (IMO); Duncan McKelvie, Chairman, Nautical Institute, UAE Branch; Capt. Jitendra Misra, Managing director, Emarat Maritime, Chairman of Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and Secretary General of UAE Ship Owners\ Association; Lazaros Sarris, Chairman, Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, UAE Branch.
