Noeleen Heyzer, UNIFEM's Executive Director, said: "As chief of the global agency to promote women's empowerment, UNIFEM is ready to support this new initiative. I am confident the charitable body will greatly benefit women and children who have faced tough times in their lives.

"We look forward to collaborating with the new body to improve the lives of women and children in the UAE, especially those who suffer from physical and psychological abuse."

The law to set up a special charitable body to care for women and children was issued earlier this month. The foundation offers assistance including shelter, health and psychological care as well as counseling to victims of abuse.

In addition, the new establishment also offers rehabilitation services by facilitating reintegration of victims into the society and helping them find alternative sources of income.
