UAE students complete english language program in the UK
- United Arab Emirates: Sunday, August 26 - 2007 at 11:40
- PRESS RELEASE
Educational initiative sponsored yearly by HSBC Bank to promote education as a key factor for UAE's continued economic development and prosperity.
The English Language Programme, an initiative driven by HSBC in the Community Foundation for the eleventh year running, attracted some 18 UAE students this year from throughout the United Arab Emirates. The Foundation COVERS all the expenses of the Programme, including college fees, air tickets, accommodation, and living expenses.
Kaltham Al Koheji, Chairperson of HSBC in the Community Middle East Foundation commented: "HSBC believes a good education is the single most important factor for the UAE's continued economic development and prosperity. As the world's local bank, HSBC strongly believes that its business will flourish if the host community flourishes. That is the reason why HSBC actively contributes to events that promote education and places great emphasis on educational initiatives like this.'
"We are pleased that our English Language Programme continues to be well received by students and their families. They see it as an opportunity to improve their spoken and written English, experience family life in Britain, in addition, the opportunity to visit some of London's famous landmarks,' Kaltham added.
Manar Al Naqbi, a student from Khor Fakkan, said: 'The teachers were very nice and kind and I had a good time with every one of them. The host family that I was staying with was very nice, welcoming, kind and generous. I will stay in touch with them by e-mail and text messages.'
Khalifa Mohamed, a student from Abu Dhabi said: "It's really a very enriching programme. Not only did I improve my English skills but I got to know a new culture and new friends as well. I am grateful to HSBC for this opportunity."
The English Language Programme was established in 1997. Students aged 16-19 from government-run schools and colleges submit essays which are then judged by the British Council. The essays may be written in Arabic or English and must be around 500 words. Approximately 60 students are then invited for interview, conducted by HSBC and the British Council, out of which 18 are chosen to attend a five week summer school in the UK. Students live with British families, increasing their knowledge and proficiency of the English language, and learn about another culture first hand.
