Dr. Kasim Randeree, The British University in Dubai, presented his research findings on "Expatriates and Emiratisation" to a major Conference, held at the University of Exeter, England.

The research paper dealt with issues of government policy and strategy, as well as the challenges facing the UAE. It was applauded for providing one of the clearest insights yet into the progressive and challenging work being undertaken by the government and the private sector.

"Dr. Randeree's insights allow us to take stock of the extent to which government policies to promote stable and sustainable growth are working and improving the lives of people in the UAE," declared Dr. Abdullah Alshamsi, Vice-Chancellor, The British University in Dubai.

"Fostering international understanding through the development of world-class research is a major part of this University's mandate and the strong response generated by this research reflects the progress we are making," he added.

An interdisciplinary Gulf Studies conference that attracted experts from around the world, the event was organised by the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies. Dr. Randeree's findings point to the long-term structural effects of women's entry into higher education, and its consequences for the employment market.

"The delivery of the Emiratisation strategy to date should be treated as an opportunity to reflect on the training needs and development of the entire region," said Dr. Randeree.

Dubai has one of the most dynamic economies in the region, placing it at the heart of the Emiratisation debate. While women's participation in the workforce has been traditionally low (just 11 percent), females make up 27 percent of the total population.

Dr. Randeree argues that the gender imbalance in society is potentially a barrier to Emiratisation. However, it is apparent that nearly four decades of higher education for Emarati women combined with the positive legislative role of the Ministry of Labour in encouraging female participation in society, are now resulting in an expansion of their role within the Knowledge Economy to the benefit of UAE society.

Following his presentation, Dr. Randeree's conference paper was well received by fellow specialists and he even received requests to appear on BBC News broadcast.

The Lecturer from The British University in Dubai has also been recognised for his work on demographic trends and cultural attitudes, including a special award from the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah in June 2007.
