Intel live with quad core Xeon

Businesses in the Middle East can buy servers running Intel's latest quad core Xeon from today. The company said at Gitex that the Xeon 7300 requires 40 per cent less power than the previous generation, the 7100, and has fours times as much memory capacity.

Codenamed Tigerton, the architecture for the Xeon 7300 will shrink to 45nm. The CPU needs 50w to operate, meaning data centres will use less power to run systems using the processor, saving on electricity bills and cooling.

Separately, Intel reiterated that its quad core mobile platform, Centrino Pro, will be available from next year.
