The awards designed to recognize and celebrate top teams and projects for delivering breakthrough solutions, demonstrating environmental leadership and setting global performance standards.

A total of 1,649 entries have been submitted by teams from across the company's global offices. Of the 22 teams participating in the Helios Awards' AMRC regional event, some may have the opportunity to reach the final round to be held at the BP global head offices in London in November, after a Global panel of BP judges complete their evaluations.

Projects from the Middle East include a safety initiative from the UAE called the 'Six Steps to Safety-Air BP Construction Project in Sharjah' and a project enhancing internal controls over Financial Reporting for the Middle East through the development of an accounting software program.

"Successful entries are mainly judged upon their ability to apply and adapt to BP's vast and diverse operational portfolio, their potential to improve our business processes and the level of positive impact they can contribute to the communities we serve," said AbdulKarimAl Mazmi, President, BP Middle East.

"The BP Helios Awards programme is a powerful way to unite 100,000 people from around the world for a single cause and purpose under the BP banner. The scheme is open to all BP employees and partners that have put our brand values into practice."

The 2005 Helios Award Green category was won by BP's Algerian team for their In Salah CO2 sequestration project. The result of that project has reduced CO2 emissions from the In Salah gas field by over 60%, the equivalent of carbon emissions from 250,000 cars in a year, making it the world's largest CO2 sequestration project.
