'Both the Arctic and the Antarctic play a critical role in the world's complex climate system. What happens to these special ecosystems has a direct impact on global climate change, and vice versa. Therefore it's increasingly important to understand how we can mitigate climate change, and the 'National Projects Climate Fellowship' is one step towards this,' said President Figueres.
Accompanying HE José María Figueres, the five-strong Fellowship team - consisting of members of the local Arab community and NPHC employees - will travel to the Arctic to observe and assist an Earthwatch research team study the impact of global climate change.
'At NPHC we are interested in engaging and educating our local communities, and our people, in discussion on the critical impact of rising Co2 emissions on our planet,' said Musaed Al-Saleh, Vice Chairman & CEO of National Projects Holding Co.
'We are involved in a number of projects across the region, including the Middle East's first fully integrated recycling and waste management park in Dubai, and believe it is vital for the public to be increasingly involved in our company vision and values towards contributing positively to global climate change.'
The five fellows will have the unique opportunity to join an Earthwatch research team in early 2008 above the Arctic Circle. They will assist the team as they study the rate of melt on the glaciers, and gain a keen understanding of the risk to global ecosystems.
'On return to their normal lives, we will ask the participants in the 'National Projects Climate Fellowship' to attend schools and universities to share their experience and key learnings from the trip,' continued Al-Saleh.
'The Middle East is a critical part of the world for promoting the understanding of climate change and the need to act swiftly to counteract this very real global environmental threat we are currently facing.'
National Projects Holding Co. believes it is the responsibility of every profitable company to give back to the communities they live and work in, and is committed to maintaining this belief in both the company's investments and social work.
The company was awarded the prestigious Arabian Business Kuwait Achievement Award for Corporate Social Responsibility in March of this year, in recognition of various socially responsible initiatives and investments over the past twelve months. These include the Dubai Recycling Park project, the UAE's inaugural global warming conference 'Global Warming: The Role of the Business Community' and the sponsorship of the Royal Shakespeare Company's first-ever production of a Shakespeare play performed in Arabic.
