Under the auspices of HE Rajha bint Abdulamir, Undersecretary for Development Affairs at Oman's Ministry of National Economy, Gulf Business Machines Oman (GBM) addressed the issues of inter-organisational data sharing by highlighting IBM and Lotus Workflow technology solutions at an e-government event held recently at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Qurum, Oman.

According to Andre Podgaietsky, General Manager of GBM Oman, the event demonstrated how Lotus Workflow automation enhances government sector operations and provides a number of 'downstream' benefits.

"Automated workflow is an integral part of Knowledge Management because it helps leverage expertise and information to improve organisational productivity, responsiveness, competency and innovation," said Mr Podgaietsky. "IBM and Lotus workflow solutions are particularly suited to the government sector because they enable more efficient interaction and information exchange between various government departments, reducing cycle times, increasing productivity, improving quality and responsiveness.

Ease of use of the technology by ministry employees is made possible by a fully Arabised graphical screen, and the visual nature of the solution features workflow diagrams that help managers and developers work together to design and review
business processes; and powerful built-in process logic allows work tasks to be assigned, scheduled, routed and tracked at every stage.

"By allowing organisations to determine and implement best practices and reduce business inefficiency, the government sector can deploy Workflow technology to improve productivity and response times and offer Omani citizens and residents alike, improved civic services. Workflow applications can also be updated to reflect organisational changes and build increased efficiencies into business processes," added Marc de Marcillac, Professional Services Manager at GBM.

The event was well attended as a part of the continuing GBM commitment to bring the latest technology to its customers in the Sultanate, and GBM Oman is also providing existing and prospective customers the opportunity of viewing Lotus Workflow in operation at its offices in Qurum.
