Lufthansa Frequent Fliers donate miles to help

With 10,000 award miles the school fees can be paid for one year for a child in India, 20,000 miles equals the salary of a nurse in West and East Africa and with 40,000 miles a child can be fed in Ethiopia for three months.

Employees of Lufthansa German Airlines and its Group companies volunteer in their free time to engage in aid projects to support cause worthy projects worldwide. The employees' initiative 'HelpAlliance' was founded eight years ago with the strong commitment to help where help is needed.

Highlighting the initiative's aim, Peter Pollak, Lufthansa General Manager Passenger Sales U.A.E. & Director Gulf & Pakistan, said: 'Lufthansa's 'HelpAlliance' continues to channel funds into specific projects that will directly benefit children and young people. We would like to encourage our frequent fliers to support us in our effort to make a lasting contribution to help those who are less fortunate. I am proud to be part of Lufthansa, a company which has a strong social conscience and in which help for those in need is high in priority.'

At present, 'Lufthansa HelpAlliance' oversees more than twenty projects worldwide. They include start-ups, educational establishments, orphanages and aid projects in areas where disasters strike. 'HelpAlliance' did so i.e. after the severe flooding in Mozambique in early 2000, the flooding in Germany of parts of the city of Dresden in the summer of 2002 and the earthquake in Pakistan in October 2005. Since the devastating earthquake in Iran at the end of 2003, 'HelpAlliance' has also been supporting an orphanage in the provincial capital Kerman, about 1,000 km south-east of Teheran.

One of the major 'HelpAlliance' projects focuses on countries located in south-east Asia which were affected by the tsunami disaster in December 2004. Lufthansa has implemented so far relief measures to the total value of more than two million Euros.
