Accepting the invitation, the Doha Debates Chairman Tim Sebastian commented, "We're delighted that the Cambridge Union - one of the world's top debating forums - has offered to host a Doha Debate. In just over three years we have become known well beyond the Gulf - and this invitation is further recognition that we debate vital world issues in a new and compelling way. We're very much looking forward to it."

Roland Foxcroft, President of the Cambridge Union, said, "The Cambridge Union is the oldest student debating society in the world and we look forward to working alongside one of the most exciting current affairs programs on international television. I hope that together we can advance free speech across the world."

The invitation from the Cambridge Union is another sign of the Doha Debates' growing international reputation. For the past three years the Doha Debates have been providing a platform in the Arab world for free and open discussion on the hottest topics in the region.

They have attracted leading world figures such as President Bill Clinton, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Dr Mohamed Elbaradei, and Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres.

The visit to Cambridge will be the Doha Debates' second event to be held abroad. It will give another opportunity for a number of students in Qatar to travel with the programme to one of the world's top ranked universities.

In May 2007, the Doha Debates held their first overseas debate at the Oxford Union.
