- Bahrain: Wednesday, October 03 - 2007 at 16:10
- PRESS RELEASE
The US Commander of the 5th fleet based in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Vice Admiral Kevin J. Cosgriff today visited the BWTC, the world's first turbine integrated building in Bahrain, a country that is looking progressively towards the future energy needs for the region and the rest of the world.
Commenting, Vice Admiral Kevin J. Cosgriff said: "Bahrain has shown it is willing to tackle significant energy issues, and they are addressing limited conventional energy supplies through sustainable architecture."
Mr. Simha LytheRao, Senior Project Manager of ATKINS Middle East, commented: "The BWTC is a landmark building that continues to attract international attention, firmly placing Bahrain on the map as a world leader in sustainable design and architecture."
The building comprises two 50-storey sail-shaped towers, which taper to a height of 240 metres and support three 29-metre diameter horizontal-axis wind turbines. The elliptical shaped towers act as aerofoils, funnelling and accelerating the wind velocity between them, and exploiting the unobstructed prevailing onshore breeze from the adjacent Gulf coast to provide a renewable source of energy for the building.
