Dubai World Central International Airport (JXB), set to be the world's largest airport, attracted major airlines at the recently held 13th World Route Development Forum 2007, the world's leading airline and airport networking event in Stockholm, Sweden.

With the world's major airlines from five continents on display, JXB was the focus for top airline executives in earmarking the future airport on their international routes and planning process.

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman, Dubai Aviation Corporation - Dubai World Central said: "With airports now considered a vital part of the route development process, the Routes event was a key annual opportunity for JXB to market its potential to the global aviation community. Global network carriers and regional operators, as well as cargo and charter airlines were a key target audience due to the new airport's regional significance as a business hub.

"Many airlines have already expressed their intention in establishing their regional base at JXB and Routes enabled us to make further inroads in drawing the attention of new airlines. The event also offered us an ideal opportunity to review the performance of airlines' established services, stimulating joint ideas with them to increase revenue and reduce costs.

"Following on last year's announcements about JXB's launch at Routes in Dubai, this year's edition allowed Dubai World Central to update global airline carriers about what will soon become the world's largest operational airport in a few years."

JXB's first CAT III, A-380 enabled 4.5 kilometre runway is scheduled for completion by end-September this year, followed by a period of rigorous testing before first cargo flights take off by mid of 2008.

Work on the first passenger and cargo terminal is well underway with installation of all navigational aids systems on schedule. The 92-metre high air traffic control tower is nearly 70% complete while work on all emergency and security service buildings has commenced.

"Dubai World Central (DWC), the huge 140 square kilometre urban aviation project which is centred around JXB, will have the latest in aviation and logistics systems creating the world's first truly multi-modal transportation platform - a unique selling point for the project at Routes," added Sheikh Ahmed.

"More so, JXB will be the only airport in the world to feature six parallel 4.5 kilometre A-380 enabled CAT-III runways, allowing passenger and cargo capacity never before seen elsewhere in the world."

The new mammoth airport will allow global operators to enhance their reach in the Middle East, Indian Sub-continent, Africa and the CIS - a billion consumer market - within three-to-four hours flying time from Dubai.
