The handover ceremony took place on Monday, 15 October 2007, at the charity premises in Jumeirah.

Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research, the UAE GDA was established to reduce the impact of common genetic disorders prevalent in the UAE. The first project of the UAE GDA, Emirates Free of Thalassaemia 2012, is aimed at identifying Beta-Thalassaemia carriers in the UAE pre-marital population. As well as screening for such genetic disorders, the program will facilitate communication and publication of scientific knowledge, promote health education and research in genetics, and offer genetic counseling.

Beta-Thalassaemia is a blood disorder that presents itself when haemoglobin-containing red blood cells are defective and cannot perform their function of transporting oxygen around the body as they should. In severe cases of the disease, levels of oxygen are too low to maintain life and so patients are totally dependent on regular blood transfusions to survive.

'I wish to thank all our loyal customers who helped us in our feat to help others. By choosing to buy a Mercedes-Benz during this holy month, you have all contributed to our worthy project,' stated Mr. Abdul Wahab, Official Relations Manager of Gargash Enterprises.

Dr. Mariam Matar, Executive Director of UAE Genetic Diseases Association said 'We are thrilled to have received such a generous donation from Gargash Enterprises; this contribution will make a huge difference to our organisation and help us move forward in our mission to alleviate suffering by raising awareness of genetic disorders widespread in the UAE.'
