The clean-up will begin at 8 a.m. at the Mina Port near the Fishermen's Wharf and it is expected to go on till 10 a.m. The area will be cleared of marine debris and litter which otherwise would end up in the sea harming the UAE's fragile biodiversity and affecting swimmers and fishermen's livelihoods.

The quantity of waste to be collected during this clean up campaign besides serving as an indicator for the waste generated in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The Clean up the World organization has declared Our Climate, Our Actions and Our Future, as the theme for the clean up this year. This theme was chosen to highlight Climate Change as it is a hot topic of global concern today. Increasing waste has a strong link to climate change, as more waste also means more consumption and production which is only possible with increased use of energy.

"Each day, each person in Abu Dhabi produces nearly 2.5 kg of waste. Increasing waste usually lands up at landfills where they begin to release green house gases which are the main cause of concern for Climate Change. The only way each of us can help combat climate change is to reduce our waste and thus help reduce our energy use," said Majid Al Mansouri, Secretary General of EAD.

"Through this campaign, the community in Abu Dhabi is given the opportunity to directly contribute to environmental protection efforts and environmental awareness is promoted on the dangers of litter and marine debris on the UAE's fragile biodiversity," said Al Mansouri, Secretary General of EAD.

Set to join the Clean-Up is H.E. Jeremy Bruer, Ambassador of Australia, who will be accompanied by members from the Australian community in Abu Dhabi. Moreover, H.E. Takuma Hatano, the Ambassador of Japan, will participate alongside over 120 members of the Japanese community. Representatives from the British Embassy will participate as well.

Besides the diplomatic community, many members of the Private sector, Educators, Abu Dhabi rehabilitation Center for Special Needs, Zayed Military Hospital and students will be taking part in this campaign.

A tent will be set up at the site and gloves, bags and water will be distributed. All participants will be given a brief prior to the start of the Clean-up. The event will include the important role taken by Abu Dhabi Municipality and Abu Dhabi Abu Dhabi Fishermen Cooperative Society.

Since its inception in 1993, CUW has grown to become one of the largest community-based environmental campaigns in the world, involving millions of people from more than 100 countries each year.
