Everyone who works at WAFI, plus customers and passerby's were invited to give their support by standing for two minutes in the Main Atrium. Ribbons were distributed to participants to show their support for the 'Stand Up & Speak Out' campaign, by forming the word WAFI.

HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussain, UN Messenger of Peace and Chairperson of the International Humanitarian City, endorses and supports this initiative, and urged people to stand up and take action in support of the eradication of poverty: "Individuals around the world have a responsibility; a responsibility to stand up and speak out, to support their governments in taking concrete steps towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals and people like you and me really can make a difference by taking the first step, by forging partnerships with governments and community organisations, and by urging our friends, colleagues and neighbours to take action themselves."

Last year, 23.5 million people stood up in support of these Millennium Development Goals to set a new Guinness World Record and they are aiming to break the record again this year. The total number of participants who stood up at WAFI was 417; 296 in the Main Atrium and 121 retailers around the mall.

"Taking part in this symbolic event is a great opportunity to remind all governments of their promise to eradicate the world of hunger, poverty and inequality," said Victoria Smith, Marketing Director of WAFI. "The commitment of 417 people was an outstanding achievement, and shows the commitment of ordinary people who want to work together to support the campaign."
