BRIDGES is a funding program designed to help translate lessons learned from clinical research, to benefit patients and communities around the globe by identifying special needs related to diabetes intervention and prevention. The initiative is also open to applicants in the Middle East.

Run by the International Diabetes Federation and supported by Eli Lilly, BRIDGES supports and funds experts to carry out innovative research into diabetes. The program has primarily been set up to encourage 'translational' research - a project to make the latest diabetes knowledge useful to everyday clinical and public health practices.

In the light of the growing diabetes epidemic in the region, translational research will help to improve prevention and will support evidence-based healthcare solutions in the field of diabetes.

"Lilly is a leader in diabetes care and is constantly developing new ways in which to create pioneering solutions for better patient care. With the prevalence of diabetes on the rise in the Middle East, BRIDGES will benefit patients in the region by identifying special needs that will aid the intervention and prevention of diabetes" said Rima Maalouf, Corporate Communication Manager, Middle East and North Africa, Eli Lilly and Company.

"We are encouraging the medical community in the Middle East Area to identify local projects and submit proposals to BRIDGES program"

According to the International Diabetes Federation, the GCC has some of the highest diabetes rates in the world; the UAE has the second highest percentage in the world with 20%. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait also have cause for concern, with 16.7%, 15.2% and 14.4% respectively of the population enduring the disease.

Despite these shocking figures, diabetes continues to be a growing pandemic and is the world's fourth leading cause of death by disease. It affects more than 240 million people worldwide and is expected to affect 380 million by 2025 .

"Although there have been tremendous advances in science, particularly through landmark clinical trials, diabetes still continues to rise, and the related morbidity and mortality have not been reduced. Translational research is needed to identify practical strategies that can improve the lives of people living with diabetes," said Professor Jean-Claude Mbanya, President-elect of IDF.
