  • United Arab Emirates: Thursday, October 25 - 2007 at 10:12
  • PRESS RELEASE

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, issued a directive mandating builders and developers in Dubai to comply with green building standards to ensure a healthy and environment-friendly city.

The decision, which comes into effect from January 2008, reflects Dubai's commitment to address environmental challenges such as climate change and global warming. It also validates the emirate's priority to sustainable development as outlined in the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015.

H.E. Mohammed Al Gergawi, Chairman of the Executive Office in Dubai, said: "H.H. Sheikh Mohammed's decision to introduce innovative strategies underscores Dubai's support of international efforts to address global environmental challenges. This decision will position Dubai as the first city in the Middle East and among few cities in the world to adopt the green building strategy."

Al Gergawi's comments were made today in Dubai at the inauguration of the headquarters of Pacific Control Systems, a total automation solutions provider with operations around the world. It is the first platinum rated green building in the Middle East, accredited by the US Green Building Council's (USGBC) LEED rating system (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design).

Ahmad Bin Byat, Secretary General of the Dubai Executive Council, said the Council will immediately adopt necessary measures to ensure effective implementation of the decision. He highlighted the phenomenal financial advantages of going green - from lower construction costs and operating overheads to reduced utility bills for Dubai residents.
