RTA awards a Dhs58m project for constructing pedestrian crossings at various zones in Dubai

Roads Traffic Authority (RTA) announced the awarding of a contract for constructing pedestrian crossings at various zones in Dubai at an estimated cost of Dhs58m.

This is viewed as part of RTA's strategy to upgrade the level of traffic safety, particularly in the zones of high pedestrian density.

Engineer Maitha bin Adai, CEO of Traffic & Roads Agency, explained that the project envisages designing and constructing 13 pedestrian crossings at various areas in Dubai, following specific traffic surveys conducted at certain defined areas that witness most pedestrian accidents. She noted that construction of such pedestrian crossings comes as part of the vision of the RTA aiming at providing safe and smooth transport for all.

"The available constructional options for these bridges are to use precast concrete and metal bridges. For the added convenience of road users, electrical lifts will be provided and positioned at all crossings along with escalators selected to match pedestrian traffic and importance of the location of the crossing. Other crossings will be provided with staircases and a lane will be provided for cyclists in each crossing," she added.

Engineer Nabeel Mohammed Salih, Director of Roads Dep't at Traffic & Roads Agency, stated that covering of pedestrian crossings will be done depending on usage density of the crossing, and importance of the location of the crossing. "There is a wide variety of crossings which include closed crossings, air-conditioned crossings, crossings covered by open-sided shelter and uncovered crossings. Due attention has been given to ensure that these crossings are beautifully turned out to fit well with the aesthetic outlook of Dubai city."
