Students have created posters and distributed flyers to inform everyone on campus about the risks of the disease and what they can do to detect and treat it.
'Breast Cancer Awareness Month provides the perfect opportunity to educate the public about breast cancer screenings,' noted Evelyn Kaplan, ADWC's Supervisor of Health Sciences. 'The month is also designed for supporting those battling the disease, honoring survivors, calling attention to medical milestones, and raising funds for further outreach and research.'
On Tuesday, 23rd October, the Health Sciences students sponsored a special event to educate the campus community on what to look for when searching for signs of the disease, and what to do should signs be detected. The students created exhibitions and kiosks to display information on detection and treatment. To encourage everyone to participate, the students distributed pink ribbons, held raffles, and challenged each other with quizzes for chances to win prizes. The students also sold gift items to raise money for the fight against the disease.
Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancers among women in the UAE, with many cases occurring before the age of 40. Additionally, 75% of those diagnosed with the disease have no family history of it. The Health Sciences students believe it is extremely important to make the campus community aware of the dangers of the disease. The students have been involved in several projects to promote awareness, and their activities have created a sense of teamwork and increased their sense of community spirit.
The Health Sciences students are planning additional events throughout the month, including another exhibition on the Wednesday, 31st October, which will incorporate poetry presentations by a number of Emirati poets and exhibits from companies throughout Abu Dhabi.
