George Mason University's Ras Al Khaimah Campus Vice President awarded Honorary Doctorate

Professor Sharon Siverts, vice president of George Mason University-Ras Al Khaimah Campus, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Botswana.

Siverts' previous academic achievements include three degrees, a PhD from The Pennsylvania State University, and a BSc and MSc from Ohio University.

Siverts served as vice chancellor at the University of Botswana from 1998 to 2003 where she saw to the development of the institution's Vision, Mission and Values statement and initiated strategic planning. She implemented the restructuring of the university's senior management, oversaw significant curriculum reform and infrastructure development.

"It is such an honour to be recognised as a key contributor to the development of the university over its 25 year history," said Siverts. "The ceremony was beautiful and I felt privileged to be one of the six recipients since Nelson Mandela was awarded an honorary degree in 1999."

Siverts, a renowned educationalist, has been in the field of academic administration for more than 25 years. Having served both in the United States and internationally, she has a wealth of experience in higher education and academic administration. In her previous work with the Commission for Academic Accreditation, Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, she oversaw the licensing and accreditation of academic programs in higher education.

Prior to working in the UAE and Africa, Siverts worked in higher education the U.S. holding a number of academic and administrative posts at various universities and was national president of four professional associations. She also held leadership roles with the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the International Association of University Presidents and the International Association of Universities.
