RCSI setting the standard in medical education

All Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI-MUB) faculty and administration, faculty from Arabian Gulf University and representatives from Bahrain Defense Force Healthcare Services attended a presentation by Associate Professor Geraldine MacCarrick, Vice Dean for Medical Education, RCSI titled 'RCSI-Setting the standard in Medical Education'.
Associate Professor MacCarrick described recent experience securing full accreditation of an Australian medical school using the Australian Medical Council Standards (based on WFME standards) and described the results of the extensive external quality assurance process at RCSI led by Dame Lesley Southgate, former President of the Royal College of General Practitioners in late 2005 using the WFME standards. She also described recent developments in medication education at RCSI and expanded on the proposed undertaking to reach full compliance with these global standards, with the next review visit by an international panel scheduled for November 2008.
Although recognising the work still to be done to achieve excellence in all nine of the WFME standards, Associate Professor MacCarrick acknowledged RCSI as a leader in the field by embracing these global standards 'We are establishing sound processes to ensure this happens'' she said ''I have been singularly impressed by RCSI and its people and their commitment to continual improvement.'
