  • United Arab Emirates: Sunday, November 11 - 2007 at 13:41
  • PRESS RELEASE

Rolls-Royce announced today at the Dubai Airshow that Emirates Airline has ordered Trent XWB engines to power up to 120 Airbus A350 XWB aircraft.

The business is potentially worth up to $8.4bn at list prices, if all options are exercised, including a long-term TotalCare services agreement.

The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB is currently the only engine available on the A350 XWB family. Emirates has ordered 50 firm A350-900 and 20 A350-1000 aircraft, with 50 option rights, due for delivery from 2014.

The Trent XWB is the fourth version of the Trent family ordered by Emirates and will bring its Trent-powered fleet to potentially 175 aircraft. Emirates operates 29 Airbus A330s powered by the Trent 700, 21 Trent 800-powered Boeing 777s and
10 A340-500s, for which the Trent 500 is the sole engine.

H H Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, said:

"We are pleased to expand our business with Rolls-Royce, who will be providing the engines for Emirates' new A350 fleet. The Trent XWB gives us optimum results in terms of lifecycle costs, performance and environmental impact. We are relying on, and have confidence in Rolls Royce's ability to meet our aircraft and operational requirements. We look forward to working with them throughout the programme."

Sir John Rose, Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce, added: "This order further develops our important relationship with Emirates and with the Middle East.

"Emirates has become one of the world's largest and most profitable airlines and we are delighted that Rolls-Royce will continue to be part of this success story through our involvement in the A350 XWB."

The Trent XWB is available in a range of thrusts from 74,000 to 92,000 lb and a single engine type will power all versions of the A350 XWB. By the time the Trent XWB enters service, Trent series engines will have accumulated more than 75 million flying hours.

Final engine configuration and selection of technologies are scheduled to be completed by mid-2008. The first Trent XWB will be ground tested in 2010. In 2011, the engine will make its maiden flight on a flying test bed, followed by airworthiness certification and first flight on the A350 XWB in 2012.

Rolls-Royce has a growing presence in the Middle East, where it is playing an important role in the development of the region across all the Group's sectors - civil aerospace, defence aerospace, marine and energy.

The Trent engine family has been ordered by many Middle East customers, including Qatar, Emirates, Etihad, Alafco and Gulf Air, powering Boeing 777s, A330s, A350 XWBs and A340s. In addition, Etihad will be the first operator in the region of the Trent-powered A380. The International Aero Engines V2500 is also operated widely.

Rolls-Royce, a world-leading provider of power systems and services for use on land, at sea and in the air, operates in four global markets - civil aerospace, defence aerospace, marine and energy. The Group has a broad customer base comprising 600 airlines, 4,000 corporate and utility aircraft operators, 160 armed forces, more than 2,000 marine customers and energy customers in 120 countries.

Rolls-Royce is continually improving the environmental impact of its products. Each year the company, in collaboration with its partners, invests around £700m on research and development, two thirds of which has the objective of reducing the environmental impact of its products and operations. This technology investment is primarily aimed at reducing noise and emissions.
