Honeywell runway incursion prevention picked by Emirates Airline
- United Arab Emirates: Monday, November 12 - 2007 at 14:20
- PRESS RELEASE
Honeywell announced today that it has been selected to provide its Runway Awareness and Advisory System (RAAS) to Emirates Airlines to assist its pilots with increased situational awareness during taxi, takeoff and landing.
"Emirates commitment to passenger safety is evident by its decision to deploy RAAS," said Mike Madsen, Vice President, Honeywell Airline Business Segment. "Honeywell's RAAS provides timely aural advisories that should significantly lower the probability of runway incursions."
"Honeywell has always been at the forefront of safety system technology," added Captain Tim Jenkins, Emirates' Senior Vice President, Safety. "With RAAS, it is like having an extra pair of eyes in the cockpit. The advanced system can improve pilots' position awareness and help address the most significant causes of airport surface incidents."
Designed to enhance flight crew situational awareness on the ground and decrease the potential for runway incursions, RAAS compares the aircraft's location using Global Positioning System technology against a database of airport runways to pinpoint the aircraft's location on the airport. RAAS can provide aural advisories covering a variety of situations including:
• Alerts pilots when entering a runway and when their aircraft is on a runway
• An optional advisory for identifying the runway on final approach to land
• Runway distance remaining call-outs during rejected take-off or long landings
• An inadvertent take-off attempt from a taxiway
• A take-off from a short runway or approach to land on a short runway
• Crew alert if the airplane sits on a runway for an extended period of time
RAAS works in concert with Honeywell's EGPWS system, expanding its capabilities for runway and approach awareness. Delivery will begin in 2008 for 110 Emirates aircraft, including Boeing 777, Airbus 330, 340 and 310 fleets.
Emirates is the world's third most profitable and among the 20 largest international airlines. Emirates operates services to 97 cities in 61 countries in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa, the Indian subcontinent and Asia-Pacific. The Dubai-based airline's 110 all wide-bodied fleet is among the youngest in the skies, with an average age of 63 months. The airline plans to more than double its size by 2012.
