Walerius, who has 25 years experience in business journalism, conducted recently a specialized three-day workshop on business journalism at the Dubai Press Club. The session was organized by Dow Jones Newswires in cooperation with Dubai Properties.

Walerius said: "In a rapidly growing city like Dubai, it is crucial to have trained professionals on business reporting. It is mandatory for these professionals to have the ability to interpret latest developments in international stock exchanges and financial markets, as well as analyse global economic changes with relevance to local or regional investors.

"Major business leaders in Dubai have already realized the need for an aggressive business press to help raise awareness of volatile stock markets and the frequently fluctuating values of major world currencies."

The Dow Jones workshop, the first in a series of training workshops that Dubai Press Club has scheduled for business journalists, provided media professionals and members of the DPC with models to analyse key economic indicators such as the GDP; consumer prices; exports and imports; trade, current, and capital accounts; retail spending; industrial production and borrowings. It also examined the role of interest rates and the significance of market movements in any economy.

The workshop helped journalists find answers to issues in the business world such as the reasons for companies going public, and the dynamics between corporate enterprises and the equity, fixed income, foreign exchange, energy and commodity markets.

Maryam Bin Fahad, Executive Director of Dubai Press Club, said the club plans to hold regular training workshops for journalists on wide ranging topics, to expand their knowledge base and ensure informed reporting.

As part of DPC's calendar, France Radio will conduct a workshop for radio presenters and broadcast professionals. The event will be held from 17-22 November, in cooperation with the French embassy.
