The funds raised in Bahrain through the Zakir Hussain concert will go towards operations and medical equipment in Bahrain, to have a direct and positive impact on the lives of Bahraini people with eyesight problems.

The concert will take place on 6 December, 2007 in the Bahrain Exhibition Centre - Hall 1 from 20h30 (doors open at 19h30). Furthermore, as part of its fundraising efforts, the Bank will host a special VIP Dinner for its top customers at the Gulf Hotel, on 5 December 2007, with all proceeds going towards the cause.

Indian native, Zakir Hussain, shot to international acclaim, most notably as co-composer of the opening music for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, USA, and also as a composer for San Francisco's premiere contemporary ballet company, Lines 1998; and composer for the San Francisco Jazz Festival, 1998.

SCB CEO, Mr. Martin Fish explained that Standard Chartered Bank launched the "Seeing is Believing" Programme to mark the Bank's 150th anniversary in 2003. In its first year, the Campaign aimed to restore the sight of 28,000 people across the globe. The campaign was so successful that sufficient funds were raised to perform 56,000 sight restorations. Our second target of raising $6m was reached one year ahead of schedule, and by World Sight Day 2007, we have reached our goal of contributing towards one million sight restorations."

"After extensive consultations with the World Health Organization (WHO) and leading eye health care organizations, we announced our most ambitious plan to date, which is to raise US$10 million by World Sight Day, 2010 to fund medical, community and education projects to make a difference to the lives of 10 million people across 20 countries," Mr. Fish revealed.

"Seeing is Believing" has shown its ability to change millions of people's lives across the world. We will continue to help people with cataract problems as well as broadening our approach to help tackle other causes of preventable blindness including glaucoma, trachoma and river blindness. As well as helping to cure avoidable blindness, the project will engage with projects aimed at preventing vulnerable people from losing their sight through education and community based projects," Mr. Fish concluded.
