The Jumeirah Golf Estates Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) will be the largest sewage treatment plant in the world using MBR technology.

The Sewage Treatment Plant is expected to have a capacity to treat about 220,000 m3 of sewage each day - nearly the same amount of high quality irrigation water. Planned as a part of the development, the plant will use state-of-the-art technology and easily blend with the surrounding environment.

The contract was signed by Mr. Ahmed Butti Ahmed, Chairman of Palm Utilities and Mr. Joubran Ouechec, representing Degremont S.A/ Besix Consortium.

The scope of the contract between Palm Utilities and Degremont S.A/ Besix Consortium includes designing, building, operating and maintaining the sewage treatment plant, the pumping station and tanks.

Mr. Ahmed Butti Ahmed, Chairman of Palm Utilities commented on the contract stating, 'Through this contract, Palm Utilities reaffirms its commitment to utilize the safest and most efficient and environmentally friendly systems.'

'The treated sewage effluent will be treated utilizing the MBR process to ensure that the strictest of irrigation standards are met and to provide a high quality effluent used to meet the irrigation demands throughout the 19 developments landscaping and golf courses', he added.

From his part, the Chief Executive Officer of Palm Utilities, Mr. Keith Levers said that 'We are pleased to announce the award of this landmark project to the Degremont/Besix JV following an extensive selection process involving a number of high quality contractors'.

'Degremont with Besix have been throughout the process a strong contender for the project and we are confident that they have the ability to deliver the project to the quality and timeframe required,' he added.

Mr. Thierry Mallet, CEO of Degrémont Group said, 'We are very proud to have been awarded the design build and operate Contract for the Jumeirah Golf Estates Development and we assure Palm Utilities that the timely execution of this World record 220,000 m3/d MBR sewage treatment plant and associated networks facilities, will become a precedence and a landmark of the sector in the region. Degrémont and Besix, through this development, will be looking for a very successful long term partnership with Palm Water in maintaining life and protecting the environment.'

The sewerage, irrigation networks and collection systems will be transferred to Palm Utilities and all future enhancements will be implemented and maintained by the company.

The plant will treat waste generated from 19 Nakheel, DMCC and Istithmar Leisure developments.

Palm Utilities advises that the plant will commence treating flows in April 2008 and the first full phase of 55,000m3/day capacity will be operational by May 2009. The plant will be completed in early 2010.

In line with their capital works target for 2007 of Dh5 billion, this is the first of three mega projects due to be let by Palm Utility in 2007, the other two being International City STP of 110,000m3/day capacity and Jafza Utilities Project which comprises of three major facilities - a desalination plant of 100,000m3/day capacity, a centralized sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 108,000m3/day, and an industrial wastewater plant with a capacity of 4,000 cubic meters per day.
