During the Frankfurt Book Fair 2007 the Executive Committee of IPA examined the applications of a number of candidates applying to be the host of IPA's quadrennial international copyright event.

In the end, Abu Dhabi was chosen as the host of the IPA's 7th International Copyright Symposium. Partners of IPA in organising this conference are the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) as well as the Arab Publishers Association. A UAE Publishers Association in Abu Dhabi is currently being formed.

The vote in favour of Abu Dhabi was due to the great interest, which the international publishing community is developing for this region. In recent years, many initiatives have been undertaken to make this region attractive for publishing, including initiatives to fight piracy and to create more awareness for piracy and rights with publishers in the whole Arab world. In addition to this, the new translation funding initiative Kalima will fund the translation of foreign works to the Arabic language for more than 100 titles each year.

With the involvement of the Frankfurt Book Fair, the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair has set its sights to becoming an international professional platform in the Arab World for rights sales and trading business between publishers from Arab and non-Arab countries.

This conference will mark one more step in Abu Dhabi's determination to grow into the cultural hub in the Gulf. Already, the Sorbonne has established a campus in Abu Dhabi, and both the Louvre and the Guggenheim Museum will be opening branches in Abu Dhabi shortly.

Participants in the 2010 International Copyright Conference will not only benefit from an excellent conference environment with State of the Art facilities, but will also be supporting the rapid cultural development in this part of the World.

Says IPA President Ana Maria Cabanellas, 'Abu Dhabi is preparing itself to become a world class publishing destination. We hope that our copyright symposium will help develop the copyright culture in the entire Arab world, to the benefit of international and local publishers.'
