Dubai holds walkathon in support of World Diabetes Day

Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and industry UAE, and endorsed by His Excellency Mr. Qadai Al Murooshid, Head of Department of Health & Medical Services (DOHMS), in association with sanofi-aventis Pharmaceuticals, and the Emirates Diabetes Society; a Walkathon & Family Entertainment Day took place on 17th November with over 1000 people attending at Safa Park in Dubai.

The event was in support of World Diabetes Day.

November 14th marks the 'World Diabetes Day' (WDD); however, this year's WDD is a particularly special occasion as it is the first 'United Nations' endorsed World Diabetes Day. This day is celebrated worldwide by over 200 member associations of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in more than 160 countries. The theme this year is 'diabetes in children and adolescents'.

The aim of this initiative in the UAE is to raise awareness of the rising prevalence of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes especially in children and adolescents, while also educating the population about the common risk factors that may lead to diabetes.

'Early diagnosis and early education are crucial for reducing complications and saving lives. The healthcare community, educators, parents and guardians must join forces to help children living with diabetes and prevent the condition in those at risk' said Dr. Abdulrazzaq Al Madani, Head of Emirates Diabetes Society.

The event started at 10:00am. with a 4.2 km walkathon, followed by an entertainment activities for the whole family, these include; trampolines, face painting, aqua football and stilt walkers. An ambulance staffed with nurses, provided by DoHMS, will be at the park for free diabetes testing and emergency services. At 2:00pm the 'Boot Camp' team will conduct a large group workout, where a personal trainer will show participants the health benefits of a regular exercise program.

The main impetus for this day is education, and fun for the entire family. 'The Middle East has one of the highest rates of obesity and diabetes in the world.' said Dr.Ghaida Khaddaha, Consultant Diabetologist, Head of Diabetes Unit Rashid Hospital.

She added; 'Flame of Hope' is an initiative by the diabetes unit of Rashid Hospital that aims at raising public awareness about the disease and its complications while at the same time help patients and their families to better cope with diabetes. This is done through organizing annual public awareness campaigns and regular group teaching sessions for patients and their carers'.

'25% of UAE's population is diagnosed with Diabetes and approximately 18% are still unaware that they have the disease.' said Dr. Fatheya Al Awadi, Consultant Endocrinologist, Dubai Hospital. 'Prevention through screenings is the key to stopping the spread of this disease.'
