  • United Arab Emirates: Monday, November 19 - 2007 at 07:53
  • PRESS RELEASE

Citibank volunteers in the UAE joined more than 55,000 Citi volunteers at more than 1,000 events in over 600 cities in 100 countries around the world for the company's second annual 'Global Community Day'.

100 volunteers in the UAE, including employees and their families and friends, planted trees in Dubai and Al-Ain, and visited a home for the elderly in Dubai.

Citi's Global Community Day is a worldwide effort involving hundreds of projects in hundreds of cities around the world. Recognizing that many Citi employees volunteer year-round in their communities, Global Community Day celebrates Citi's volunteer spirit on one-day worldwide. Local volunteer teams worked on a variety of projects addressing specific community needs including literacy, housing, environmental protection, nutrition, and health care.

In cooperation with the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), Citibank volunteers planted 60 trees at Salma Al-Ansaria School and Dubai National School in Dubai, and at the Indian School in Al-Ain.

Citibank volunteers also visited Al-Mamzar Centre for the Elderly in Dubai and spent a half-day of quality time with elderly patients. Activity ended with lunch at the Center's garden.

"Citi is committed to mobilizing the enthusiasm and talents of our employees so that they can make a positive difference in the communities where we work together. Citi's Global Community Day is company-wide, with tens of thousands of volunteers in Asia Pacific, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and North America. It is a symbol of the many ways we make a difference, through our business practices, our philanthropy and our volunteerism,"

said Pamela Flaherty, President and Chief Executive Officer, Citi Foundation and Director, Corporate Citizenship.

Mohammed Al-Shroogi, Managing Director for the Middle East and Chief Executive Officer for Citi in the UAE, said: "The Global Community Day is one way to demonstrate our resolve to fulfill our duty as a responsible corporate citizen in the UAE and elsewhere in the region. We are committed to be an integral part of the Middle Eastern societies where we've maintained a presence for more than half-a-century, and we intend on being socially active and serving the community on an ongoing basis."
