Last week the heads of states of the 12 members of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) ended their 3rd summit in Riyadh in a bold and surprising step when President H.H. The UAE has firmly positioned itself on the environmental platform with this international announcement and by hosting the upcoming World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, January 2008, which promises to be the largest and most comprehensive event on future energy.

Even though the statement seemed against the interests of the OPEC, Sheikh Khalifa explained in a quote from Gulf News, "A cleaner, safer and reasonably priced alternative source of energy would lift the burden off the shoulders of oil producing countries'." He assured the international community that OPEC doesn't intend to exploit the industrial world's needs for energy but rather wants to work in cooperation with it to stabilise the energy market. In addition the UAE pledged to contribute $150 million to back scientific research in the field of energy, environment and climatic change.

The World Future Energy Summit will expand on Sheikh Khalifa's commitment by bringing together the world's leading experts on the future of energy to discuss and debate the issues and implications of climate change. Since addressing the environmental dilemma that threatens the future of the planet is so important, the summit is focusing on every sector that can make a difference from governments, energy companies, financial institutions, to construction and car manufacturers.

Over 85 speakers have been invited to speak extensively on each of the focal divisions. Governments, NGOs, and environmental agencies can look into the latest developments in future fuels and how they can fund solutions in alternative energy. Energy companies will be encouraged to network with suppliers, consumers and other companies to look at the latest technological advances.

Identifying investment opportunities and risks on a global level will be ideal for the investors, financial institutions and entrepreneurs attending the summit. Lastly the architects, civil engineers, construction companies, car manufacturers and transport providers will learn from experts about the latest plans for zero-emission development and its impact on their industries. The World Future Energy Summit, like OPEC, will call on the international community to protect the stability of global energy markets, reaffirm the need to use energy for sustainable development and emphasise the importance of protecting the environment for future generations.
