- United Arab Emirates: Thursday, November 29 - 2007 at 10:03
- PRESS RELEASE
The Health Sciences students at the Abu Dhabi Women's College continue their campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer.
To raise the funds, the Health Sciences students created special events throughout the month of October to educate the ADWC campus community about breast cancer. Events included information booths, exhibition stands created by students and by outside companies, and poetry readings by UAE National poets Sauod Mubarak Al Musaabi and Tareq Abdulla Al Mehyas. Students sold tickets to the poetry readings and handmade items at exhibition stands to raise money.
"The dedication of the Health Sciences students has been extraordinary," said Evelyn Kaplan, Supervisor of ADWC's Health Sciences department. "The students were determined to educate the community about the disease and spread awareness not only on campus, but throughout Abu Dhabi. Their efforts this year have resulted in raising a significant amount of money and we are extremely proud of their achievement."
The Health Sciences students decided to donate the funds to Bosom Buddies because of the organization's mission to support women of all nationalities in the UAE whose lives have been touched by breast cancer. The organization seeks to increase public awareness of the disease in the UAE and works with the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City Breast Cancer Support Group in fundraising and other cooperative activities. Bosom Buddies uses funds to assist women who are financially challenged and provides them with up-to-date treatments and care in their fight against breast cancer. The organization meets with Emirati women monthly to share experiences and to provide support.
The cheque was presented to Melanie Gobert and Gehan Wheeler, members of Bosom Buddies who expressed their gratitude for the students' efforts in helping to raise awareness about the disease and raise funds that will significantly help women in the UAE.
