TRA Bahrain participates in Environmental Responsibility Summit

The event was organized by Arab Forum for Environment & Development (AFED) and held in Abu Dhabi.

In his capacity as President of the Arab Regulators Network (ARGNET); the General Director of Bahrain's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority Alan Horne participated in the Arab Corporate Environmental Responsibility Summit.

More than 100 people from across the Arab world attended the Summit, which aimed to focus attention on sustained development, taking into account the responsibility to protect our environment for the future. Other attendees form Bahrain included representatives from ALBA and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

Commenting on TRA's participation in the Summit, TRA's General Director, Alan Horne said: "the telecommunications sector not only has a responsibility to meet the requirements of the codes of practice, norms and standards in support of sustainable development meeting environmental responsibility but also to support other industries meet the same obligations. Broadband communications enabling cost effective and user friendly video conferencing and communications whilst on the move can considerably assist business people to reduce travel and in turn carbon emissions. The Telecommunications providers in the region have to be creative in their services and pricing to encourage greater use of communications services and a reduction in travel to meetings".

During the Summit, participants discussed a declaration on Arab Corporate Environmental Responsibility and Cleaner Production. These discussions will pave the way towards developing adequate programs to ensure sustainable business practices. Through the Summit, organizers aimed to instill the culture of environmental responsibility in business leaders to enable them to face global and regional challenges and compete in markets with fast-evolving environmental standards.
