Savings and Credit Bank Kuwait centralizes operations with Sun solutions

The solution is the first Sun Ray success story in Kuwait, specifically in the government sector, and will scale with SCB's future growth and business requirements.

SCB were looking to implement a 24x7 high availability solution to run their Sybase Database, Email and File system, and also for an architecture to centralize their storage and backup. Furthermore, SCB wanted a solution that would enable them to centralize the desktop support and operation.

"We had 500 desktops that were consuming a lot of the IT department's day-to-day effort and time, especially as the majority of these were located in remote branches. The Sun Ray Software has simplified everyday processes such as HW troubleshooting, installing patches and OS crashes," said Fawzi Al Asfoor, Operation & Technical Support Supervisor, SCB.

"We selected Sun for their proven track record in providing enterprise solutions and their ability to ensure high availability. The Sun virtual display desktop solution also demonstrated a thin client solution that didn't require any type of management on the user side. This met SCB's requirements as other thin client solutions required an imbedded operating system and memory to be installed in each user terminal,"

said Hussain Al-Khamees, IT Manager, SCB.

In addition to fulfilling SCB's growing business requirements, the Sun StorageTek 6140 advanced storage based replication features have enabled SCB to replicate its data as part of its future plans for disaster recovery, thereby meeting all their future goals.

"Our aim was to assist SCB's business continuity by providing a centralized and automated SAN backup solution for all of their servers," said Marc Heger, District Manager - Gulf Region, Sun Microsystems. "The Sun Ray thin client solution has benefited SCB by centrally deploying applications which has in turn reduced the number of calls the desktop support was receiving from an average of 30 calls a day to zero."

The Sun products installed as part of this project include: Sun Fire V890 server, Sun StorageTek 6140, Sun Enterprise Backup Software, Sun Ray 270 thin client and Sun Fire X4200 AMD servers.

"Diyar United Company understood SCB's requirements and provided a full fledged solution," added Bashar Atout, General Manager, Diyar United. "The fact that Diyar has been an authorized Sun partner for more than 10 years gave SCB confidence in the credibility of the solution provided and the quality of service that will be delivered during implementation and support."
